Parthenon audio guide

A single shell turned two thousand years of endurance into ruin in minutes.

You are standing below the Parthenon. You know it was built by the Greeks. What many guides pass over is the evening it became the ruin you see today: 700 barrels of gunpowder, a Venetian shell, and a monument that had survived for two thousand years breaking open in minutes.

What happened to the Parthenon?

For centuries, the Parthenon had changed purpose without collapsing. It had been a temple, a church, a mosque, and a storehouse. Then, in September 1687, during the Venetian siege of the Acropolis, Ottoman forces stored gunpowder inside it. A shell fired from Philopappou Hill struck the building. The explosion tore through the centre, killed hundreds, and turned one of the best-preserved monuments of antiquity into the ruin visitors know today. The free story, The Lucky Shot, tells that night from the place where you can still see its result.

How it is different from a Parthenon fact list

A fact list tells you the dates. Unmute Athens starts with the moment: the sound of one shell, the powder hidden inside the monument, and the reason the Parthenon in front of you is no longer whole.
